Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several access tunnels down to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their valour," he said. "Including them were thousands of British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, shows how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the US military carried out what it termed a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, following an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
