Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs added to the market in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication once the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
