"Any idea when you're chatting with Haim?" an inquiry pops up. "My request was to ask if I can be their extra sister."

There is only one problem: The author likewise wants to be Haim's additional sibling. Furthermore, we are far from alone. A host of high-profile supporters have openly petitioned for the position.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their career doing sets at small eateries with their parents. Now they're repeated Grammy Award hopefuls.

Similar to the most iconic ensembles, they're a close gang. Their visuals repeatedly depict them marching in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such boundless exuberance you can't help but think, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"How often on tour that fans approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a bass'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "It is the ultimate compliment. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire young girls to form a group."

"Therefore all gets an invitation to be the next member of Haim."

Grammy Nod

The trio are speaking from their homes, where they're taking a pause after an extensive tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in contention for the prize.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the honor is deeply felt by the sisters.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant step," continues Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the female artists that inspired us."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The project came out of a period of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that unique liminal space where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The words detail endings and partings. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them working out in the moment who they are becoming.

"I love description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to actively work on shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Evolution of Music

That developed toughness required a fresh approach – more unpolished and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Stories and Shared Humor

The band's honesty inspired the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their personal misadventures.

Someone ended things with Este over a health concern. Alana shared a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"During these breakups, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Legacy

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their position in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an international audience.

However the sister act will consistently be their top priority.

"We have been playing music since I was a young child," shares Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still going strong."
